The Brief
I iteratively designed an infographic for a graphic design class I took in my last semester at university. The project offered me the opportunity to expand & layer my approaches to visual and communication design. I created an A2 Poster to communicate a combination of Spotify's textual dataset. The project was research-heavy and aimed to visualise a complex, nested dataset. The steps followed by me to complete the project were:
- Choosing a Topic of Interest
- Doing Background Research
- Gathering Data
- Choosing the Information Graphic Devices to Communicate the Data
- Organising the Layout Hierarchy
- Producing Sketches & Getting Feedback

The Iterative Design Process
Moodboarding
One of the first things that I focussed on before starting the infographic was to set a mood for the infographic. I moodboarded Spotify’s UI elements, seeing how they incorporated iconography, text placement and how they incorporate colour in their product.
Neural Networks
I visually modelled my main nested dataset similar to how a neural network looks like, because Spotify uses neural networks for its personalisation algorithms which work un- der the hood to deliver personalised music recommendations for users.
Spotify Branding
A huge chunk of the visual identity of my infographic was dependent on Spotify’s original branding kit. This included the primary colour palette of green, white and black, the well-recognised secondary colours such as neon pink and lime green, as well as the typography (Proxima Nova).
Genre-Hunting
Since the infographic was highly content-heavy, I had to research quite a bit in order to figure out what genre(s) each artist fitted into, and further what sub-genres were available within specific genres. The process was highly rewarding, and I discovered new music along the way.
